Underfloor heating is now recognised as an efficient and cost effective way of heating all types of buildings. Up to 50% of all self build homes go for this option, along with a growing number of extension and conservatory projects, hospitals, residential homes etc.
Most underfloor heating companies recognise the high insulation value of Seconds rigid foam boards and the advantages to the running costs of their systems. These advantages are passed on to the customer in quicker response time, lower running costs and less system maintenance due to the system working less, and more efficiently. Seconds rigid foam boards offer nearly twice the thermal efficiency of normal insulant and are highly competitive in this situation.
Their benefits are also recognised in ordinary under slab or screed insulation situations where an underfloor system is not being used.
Fixing details
- Install a damp proof membrane below the slab.
- Level the surface of the slab.
- Cut strips of board as upstands to fit around floor perimeters to eliminate heat bridging at screed edges.
- Upstand height should be equal to the thickness of insulation plus screed.
- Lay full size 1200 x 2400mm or 600 x 1200 boards directly onto the prepared slab cutting infill boards as required. Joints should be tightly butted.
- Lay the under floor heating system onto the rigid foam boards and hold down using manufacturer's clips.
- Apply a sand/cement screed over the boards to a thickness recommended by the underfloor heating manufacturer (normally 65mm).
- Compact screed solidly when laid. Reinforce the screed if possible, especially if minimum thickness of 65mm cannot be achieved.
- Allow screed to dry thoroughly before applying finished surface, i.e. carpet, timber flooring etc.
- These recommendations are suitable for normal domestic floor loadings.
